Heat pump leads for installers and engineers

A fault call on an existing unit can fit between two other visits; a ground loop needs a survey, a groundworker and a few weeks. Compareheatpumps.co.uk sends heat pump enquiries to Leads Do Work so heating businesses can pick the work that suits their skills and their diary.

What a heat pump lead gives you

Each lead is a homeowner or landlord who has asked about heat pump work. You get the chance to call them, find out about the property and put a price forward. Up to four contractors can see the same enquiry, so a lead is never a guaranteed survey, booking or paid job.

You set your prices and decide which enquiries to take on. Your business is responsible for the advice, survey, contract, work and payment. How many leads arrive depends on customer demand and your coverage; buying a pack does not guarantee income.

Choosing a lead pack

Leads come in packs of 5, 10 or 20. Check the current lead-pack terms before paying. Smart Local is a subscription: packs renew after the included leads have been delivered, no sooner than seven days after the previous pack started. Confirm the price, VAT, cancellation and credit terms in your account.

5-lead pack

A sole trader can try this pack alongside existing installation or service work. Leave time to call customers back and to arrange surveys for jobs that need one.

10-lead pack

Suits a business that already quotes regularly for heat pumps or cylinders. Think about how many surveys you can fit in before customers move on.

20-lead pack

For a team with more than one surveyor and someone to handle calls. Make sure visits for full installations can be booked quickly, as those customers are often comparing several quotes at once.

Choose the heat pump services you can deliver

Air-to-Air Heat Pump Installation

Select this work if you can survey room loads, specify indoor units and complete the refrigerant, drainage and commissioning work. Ask about pipe routes and outdoor-unit access before allowing a fixed installation time.

Ground Source Heat Pump Installation

These enquiries need collector design and a workable plan for excavation or drilling. Confirm who surveys the ground, who supplies the drilling team and who prices reinstatement before offering a complete package.

Heat Pump Cylinder Installation

Check the heat pump model, required coil performance, household demand and available space. Allow for the safe discharge route, expansion arrangements, controls and removal of the old cylinder when pricing.

Heat Pump Radiator Upgrades

Ask for the room heat losses and design temperatures before quoting a radiator schedule. Include valves, any pipe alterations, cleaning, balancing and the agreed making good, rather than pricing panel swaps alone.

Heat Pump System Design and Sizing

Be clear whether you offer a measured survey, a desktop calculation or a full design pack. Set out the deliverables, assumptions, revision allowance and whether another installer may use the report.

Heat Pump Fault Diagnosis and Repair

Only take enquiries for equipment you can diagnose and support. Check the make, model and guarantee position, explain the diagnostic charge and confirm parts availability before promising a repair date.

Only select work your team is equipped and trained to carry out. That can mean MCS certification for the technology, appropriate F-gas qualifications for work involving fluorinated refrigerants, unvented cylinder training and electrical competence. Be clear about who notifies building control and who registers the guarantee.

Set a realistic area

Travel and parking can use up most of the margin on a short fault call. A ground source installation may justify a longer drive. Set coverage around the work you want, and update it as your diary fills.

Check the full postcode and access before you offer a time. Coverage settings help match enquiries but do not promise demand in every area you choose.

Questions worth asking on the first call

  • Is the customer without heating or hot water now, and do they expect urgent attendance? A lead is not an emergency booking.
  • Ask for photos of the existing boiler, cylinder, meter cupboard and the likely site for any outdoor unit.
  • For ground source, ask about the garden size, access for machines and any buried services.
  • For radiator upgrades, ask whether a heat loss report already exists and which rooms stay cold.
  • For faults, ask for the make, model, error code and whether the unit is still under guarantee.
  • Confirm who can approve the work, especially in rented homes.

Respond while the details are fresh

Start by naming the enquiry: a cylinder swap needs a different first conversation from an error code on an existing unit. Ask when the customer can speak, whether the property is occupied and what photographs they can safely send. If you miss them, leave a short message with your business name and the work they asked about.

For installations, offer a realistic survey slot and explain any fee before booking. For repairs, say which makes you cover and whether the first charge is for diagnosis only. Follow up a written quote at the time agreed with the customer.

Quote the whole job

A heat pump price without the cylinder, controls, electrical work and making good leaves the customer guessing. A radiator upgrade price without pipework and balancing does the same. List those items so the customer can see what they are paying for.

Agree how you will handle anything unexpected, such as an undersized electrical supply, poor ground or a pipe that cannot take the flow. Explain it, revise the price and get approval before carrying on. Show VAT, grant arrangements and the guarantee terms clearly.

Register your heat pump business

We ask businesses that join for their insurance details and references. Keep your profile up to date, especially your services and any MCS certification. Account details and pricing are on the Leads Do Work website, or download the app from the links near the top of this page.

Frequently asked questions

Are heat pump leads exclusive?

No. Up to four contractors can see each enquiry. Think of it as a chance to call the customer and quote, not a job already won.

Can I look at leads before buying a pack?

Yes. A contractor account is free and lets you see open enquiries in the app. The paid options and their terms are shown in your account.

Does a lead guarantee a heat pump job?

No. The customer may not go ahead, may choose another installer or may need different work. Appointments, accepted quotes and paid jobs are not guaranteed.

Who sets the price for the work?

You do. You look at the job, price it and agree the scope, dates, contract and payment with the customer yourself.
